Welcome
to the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra's home page. We invite
you to explore
our website and learn more about one of the oldest community
orchestras on the West Coast of North America.
The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra serves music enthusiasts
in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia and beyond. The NWSO
offers a popular program of four indoor concerts each year, plus
our annual appearance at the Hyack
Festival of New Westminster in May, and other musical presentations
in the Lower Mainland. From our early 20th century beginnings,
the NWSO has been a cultural fixture of the City
of New Westminster. In the 21st century, the NWSO continues
our dependable musical traditions for the residents of the Lower
Mainland. Our policy of "admission by donation" ensures
that everyone who enjoys good classical music can attend our
concerts.
The NWSO takes pride in the
cultural, ethnic and age diversity of our orchestra members.
Our current playing members and auxiliary volunteers range from
their teens to 80+ years, with an equal balance of male and female
members. The NWSO is home to dedicated musicians
from all backgrounds and training, providing them with an opportunity
to perform with a professionally-directed symphony orchestra.
The NWSO offers an educational
program for students and young fans of music. The NWSO and the
Douglas
College Music Department are proud to include talented music
students in the NWSO as part of their education. Student musicians
take the ensemble course and receive an assessment towards their
course credit. Our annual "Classical Pops Concert for Children"
in November is a favourite of our younger audience, and an easy
introduction to classical music. The NWSO is planning a workshop
with a well-known, prize-winning Canadian composer. The workshop
will be advertised in schools and open to composition students.
Each season runs from September
to May, and rehearsals take place every Sunday at 1:45 p.m. in
New Westminster. The NWSO welcomes new
playing members, subject to space availability in each section
of the Orchestra. An informal audition may be requested, and
applicants should be capable of performance at the RCM Grade
7/8 level. A waiting list of qualified musicians may be established.
Our first rehearsal in 2009-2010 is Sunday, September 13, 2009
at 1:30 p.m. Location: Douglas College (Band Room 3285), 700
Royal Ave, New Westminster, BC.

2009 - 2010 take place at:
